Mindful Yoga Poses and Practices for Kids

To get started with mindful yoga, try incorporating some of these playful poses and practices into your child's day:

Animal Poses

Animal poses are a wildly fun way to get kids moving and grooving! Here are a few animal poses to try:

  • Downward-Facing Dog: Like a stretching pup, this pose lengthens the spine, tones the arms, and energizes the body. Have your child come onto their hands and knees, then lift their hips up towards the sky, keeping their paws and tails straight.
  • Cat/Cow Pose: Meow-sa! This pose purrs away tension and stiffness in the spine, while promoting flexibility and relaxation. Have your child come onto their hands and knees, then arch their back up towards the ceiling (cat pose), and then lower their belly towards the floor while lifting their head up (cow pose).
  • Cobra Pose: Sssso good for the back and arms, this pose stretches the chest, strengthens the shoulders, and opens the heart. Have your child slither onto their belly with their hands under their shoulders, then lift their chest up off the ground while keeping their legs and hips on the floor.

Sun Salutations

Sun salutations are a sequence of yoga poses that salute the sun and awaken the body. Here's a simplified version that's perfect for kids:

  1. Stand tall and take a deep breath in, reaching your arms up high. Say "Hello, Sun!"
  2. Exhale and bend forward, touching your toes or the ground. Say "Goodbye, Ground!"
  3. Inhale and look forward, placing your hands on your shins. Say "Good Morning, Eyes!"
  4. Exhale and step or hop back into plank pose, holding your body strong and steady. Say "I Am Brave!"
  5. Lower down to the ground into a low push-up, hugging your elbows in. Say "I Am Strong!"
  6. Inhale and lift your chest up into upward-facing dog, stretching your spine and opening your heart. Say "I Am Loved!"
  7. Exhale and lift your hips up into downward-facing dog, straightening your legs and reaching your tailbone high. Say "I Am Awesome!"
  8. Take a few deep breaths here, wiggling your tail, barking like a dog, or doing a happy dance. Say "Woof Woof!" or "Namaste!"
  9. Step or hop your feet forward and repeat the sequence, saying "Goodbye, Sun!" and "Hello, Ground!" at the end.

Yoga is a wonderful tool for helping children connect with their bodies, calm their minds, and build strength and flexibility. By incorporating mindfulness practices into yoga sessions, parents and caregivers can help children develop their emotional intelligence and self-awareness, setting them up for success in all areas of life.
